E-learning has many advantages but often receives the feedback that it is too impersonal. Learners often miss the personal touch when they make the switch to digital asynchronous learning. And let’s admit it, very often this is the case, because all too often the focus is on conveying as much information as possible when developing e-learning.

However, thanks to huge advances in technology, there are many ways to easily (and cheaply) personalise e-learning!  Here are 3 tips to make your e-learning more personal:

  1. Everyone is different and learns differently (UDL). When developing your e-learning, make sure you take into account that everyone has a different learning strategy Some people like to read text, for example, but others prefer to use a video or podcast to remember certain things. Therefore, present the content of the e-learning in different ways so that it is interesting, accessible and adds value for everyone.
  2. Give the learner choices. With e-learning, the learner usually has the choice to go through the e-learning at a time and place of their choice. But you can create more choices for the learner throughout the e-learning. For example, you can let the learner choose the order in which to learn, you can let the learner choose between certain cases / examples, you can let the learner choose the font type and size, etc. The possibilities are endless and of course depend on the subject and the software used to create the e-learning.
  3. Give the teacher a face. At the start of the e-learning, the teacher can introduce himself or herself by means of a short text or even a short film (even more personal!). Of course, the learners can also be asked to briefly introduce themselves (e.g. on a forum); this also creates interaction between the learners. The trainer can also record several knowledge clips that can then be used in the e-learning. In addition, it can be nice to organise a live Q&A, where learners can meet the trainer online and ask questions. Two birds with one stone!

In short, e-learning does not have to be impersonal. There are endless possibilities to personalise e-learning, depending on your target group, your learning objectives, your topic and the software you use.
